Value
The #2 question is, “What is this worth?” Each class is taught by a nationally certified instructor teaching a standardized curriculum. This means you can expect a consistent level of high quality instruction. You’ll immediately notice the level of professionalism both from the school and from the other students. For whatever reason you begin your journey to black belt, you’ll finish with the same sense of accomplishment that the students who have succeeded before you have enjoyed. How long does it take for the average person to earn a black belt? Average people don’t earn black belts. |

Most people who enroll say, “I’ve driven by and I’ve thought about coming in, but…” They always have a reason for not taking the extra step. What’s holding you back?
What’s your reason?
There are a number of reasons people look through the window, but we’d rather you observe a class. Don’t worry if you’re out of shape or are afraid you won’t “get it” right away.
New Year’s / Spring / Birthday Resolutions
Jan. 1 is the most popular time of the year for adults to decide to get fit and try new things. However many people choose other times to make resolutions. It’s never been a more perfect time to try taekwondo. You may set a new goal in 2013: make new friends, get in shape, or learn a skill.
It’s convenient, affordable and commitment-free
For the cost of one or two fast food meals every week, you can be on your way to becoming a black belt! There’s no pressure to sign a lengthy contract when you start your journey at Olney Taekwondo Center. Just come in, watch a class, take a class, and pay monthly if you decide it’s right for you.
We have (a lot of) fun
Our students attend local and regional tournaments… and win! OTC participates in the local cancer fundraiser “Relay for Life.” In 2008, we raised over $1,700 at our board break-a-thon and continued to raise more in 2009, 2010, and 2011. We host parties, gather after tests, and even have cookouts. Self defense is serious, but we keep a light hearted atmosphere outside of taekwondo class.
We take martial arts seriously
Our students learn techniques with practical applications. Students train for months before attending sparring classes. It’s important to learn basic hand and foot striking combinations, and our intermediate and advanced students apply them regularly in special classes dedicated to combat situations.
Sparring and taekwondo: is it safe?
Our students train for six months prior to sparring. Their first sparring partner is always Mr. Wheatley, who helps every student on an individual basis before sparring other students in class. Students develop basic skills and demonstrate control when kicking and punching. Contact is minimal at first; advanced students make moderate contact (and only wearing protective gear).
Safety precautions include adhering to a nationally standardized set of rules. Specialized gear is worn by students when sparring in class and at tournaments to ensure injuries are kept to an absolute minimum. To date, there have been hundreds of students train successfully at OTC and PMA. There have been no sparring/kicking/punching injuries (only a stubbed toe).
We don’t “just teach” taekwondo.
The curriculum also introduces a familiarity with real-life situations such as defense against assault (including weapons). It’s unrealistic to assume that an attacker will only punch and kick. Even our earliest students receive age-appropriate self defense techniques. In addition to physical fitness, our Taekwondo classes promote discipline, honor, self-control, respect, courtesy, perseverance and loyalty.
